The death of Ireland’s favourite Englishman Jackie Charlton allowed many to reminisce on one of Ireland’s greatest summers 30 years ago, thanks to the Irish national football team’s performances in the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. Charlton also presided over the Euro 88 and the 1994 World Cup finals. Ireland’s success on the pitch had serious cultural significance.
